The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office 2024 Community Survey delivers a powerful, data-driven snapshot of public trust and confidence in local law enforcement, highlighting a department moving decisively in the right direction. Based on an in-depth, biennial phone poll of 600 residents conducted citywide in May 2024, the survey reveals broadly positive perceptions of JSO’s performance, transparency, accountability, and use of resources. Guided by Sheriff T.K. Waters’ philosophy that “the community is our customer,” the results serve as a clear measuring stick for progress and improvement. Nearly 68% of respondents say JSO is doing a good job, producing a +48 net approval rating and a notable 22-point increase since 2022, while almost 90% of Duval County residents report feeling safe in their own neighborhoods. Majorities also believe JSO is responsible with taxpayer money, handles internal investigations and officer-involved shootings appropriately, and does not evoke personal fears of police brutality. At the same time, the survey candidly identifies ongoing priorities, including staffing needs, funding support, and community concerns around gun violence and illegal drug use.
