Amethyst Cathedral with Calcite Crystal

 An Amethyst cathedral is a Geode that is typically shaped like a church cathedral. Amethyst is a variety of Quartz that contains a few parts per million of iron. Geodes are usually formed in bubbles and other cavities inside volcanic rock, mainly molten rock that has joined other layers of rock. They can also form in thick surface lava, so the process of cooling is slow. Molten lava contains many gases, so as it cools the gases are released and cause bubbles and cavities in the rock.
